Rubidge became a land surveyor in 1849 and worked as an engineer on the Williamsburg Canals, 1844-1848, Grand Trunk Railway, 1852-1860, Ontario Board of Works, 1860-1863, Intercolonial Railway, 1865-1872 and St. Lawrence Canals, 1872-1882. He became superintending engineer for the Department of Railways and Canals at Cornwall, in 1886. He also served during the Fenian Raids in 1866 as captain of the Morrisburg Battery. He died in 1904.
