Strange, T. Bland (Thomas Bland), 1831-1925 : Major General Thomas Bland Strange was born and educated in England. Obtaining a commission in the Royal Artillery, he served with distinction in India during the Mutiny (1857), and came to Canada in 1871 as an inspector of artillery and military stores. He was first commander of "B" Battery, and in 1874 was given supervision of militia artillery units. In 1881 he retired and founded the Military Colonization Company ranch in southern Alberta. During the Northwest Rebellion in 1885, Strange commanded the Alberta Field Force. He returned to England about 1892 and wrote GUNNER JINGO'S JUBILEE (London, 1894), an autobiography containing an account of his life in Canada. The Canadian Encyclopedia.
