Fonds consists of personal correspondence with parents and friends, medical reports, official correspondence and a journal relating to Wolseley's expedition in Manitoba, 1870-1871; a journal of an expedition in the Middle East, 1884; and additional correspondence, 1902, 1903.

Neilson, John Louis Hubert, 1845-1925 : Colonel John Louis Hubert Neilson, the grandson of John Neilson, was born in Quebec and educated at St. Mary's College, Montreal, Laval University and Royal Victoria Army Medical School. He served as a surgeon with the 2nd Quebec Battalion of Riflemen during Wolseley's expedition to the Red River in 1870 to 1871. In 1884 he went to Egypt as surgeon major with the Canadian Voyageurs in the Gordon Relief Expedition. From 1898 to 1903, he was director-general of medical services in the Canadian militia.

The majority of these papers were received in 1944. One letter was received in 1972, and the photocopy was made from an original held by the Archives nationales du Québec.
