Collection consists of 83 notebooks of David Thompson, 1789-1950; journals of David Thompson, 1801-1840; correspondence, 1840-1843; and a microfilm of Thompson's exploration narrative, 1784-1812, in Western America. Originals, 125 pages; transcripts, 74 pages. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reel M-236.

Thompson, David, 1770-1857 : David Thompson spent the years 1784-1797 in the Hudson's Bay Company service, and then joined the North West Company. He was employed chiefly as a geographer and explorer, and gained fame for his exploration of the Columbia River. After retiring in 1812 to Terrebonne, and later Williamstown, he engaged in survey work on the Canada-U.S. boundary, 1816-1826, and on other projects.
