Item consits of a transcript of a journal kept by David Holden, copied into the blank spaces found into the book, Adela, published in 1799. The copy appears to have been made from the original, which has been held by the Massachusetts Historical Society since 1889. The journal was published at Cambridge, Mass. in 1889, with an introduction by Samuel A. Green, under the title, Journal kept by Sergeant David Holden.
The journal records Holden's service against the French in a Massachusetts regiment from the 20 February to the 19 November 1760. Holden describes the travels of the soldiers, their behaviour and discipline as well as the events of the war he participated in, along Lake Champlain to Montreal.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Holden, David, 1738-1803 : David Holden, the son of John Holden and Sarah Davis, was born in Groton, Mass. 10 December 1738. In early 1760, he enrolled as a Sergeant in Captain Leonard Whiting's company in the campaign against the French. The following year Holden married Sarah Hemenway (b. 1739) of Townsend, and settled in that town as a farmer and cooper; most of his nine children were born there.
