The fonds consists of over 600 genealogical studies of Red River settlers, original fur traders, and servants of the Hudson's Bay Company and North West Company in the Red River area covering the years ca. 1749 to 1804, photocopy, 1967, 0.15 m; card index of approximately 4,000 cards prepared from the parish registers of the Red River Settlement, transcript, 1820-1884, 0.98 m; microfilmed scrapbook concerning the Kipling family, ca. 1962-1968, 1 microfilm reel, M-1393. The microfilmed scrapbook contains genealogical information on the Brazeau, Brabant, McGillis, Grant and MacDonald families and approximately 250 genealogies of settlers and traders in the Red River area, 1749-1884.

Kipling, Clarence, 1933-2001 : As a centennial project in Canada's centennial year, 1967, Clarence Kipling of Calgary, being himself of Red River métis descent, undertook a genealogical study of the Red River Settlement, Manitoba. The main sources used in the study were the 1870 Manitoba census returns (available on microfilm reel C-2170) and the parish registers of Red River churches. Additional sources included other census returns and parish records, published diaries and métis scrip records, as well as family traditions, personal testimony, biographical studies, books and articles from magazines and newspapers.

Custodial history:

The photocopies of the genealogies and the microfilm of the scrapbook were acquired in 1968; the card index was purchased in 1971. The Kipling Collection was originally catalogued under MG31, I 5 and I 3, and titled Clarence Kipling.
