Ross and Company : Ross and Company (fl. 1843-1891) was the creation of James Ross (1819-1888), a successful Quebec City entrepreneur. Beginning in 1843 with a grocery business in partnership with his uncle, James Gibb, Ross developed a shipping operation which owned as many as 80 ships and traded to all major parts. He also possessed extensive timber rights in Canada and provided venture capital for various Canadian projects.

Ross's brothers and other relatives controlled a number of other companies, notably W.R. Ross and Company, Liverpool and Thomas Ross and Company, New York.

James Ross died in 1888, leaving an estate of seven and a half million dollars, and Ross and Company, Quebec, went into liquidation ca. 1891.
