Fonds consists of family papers, chiefly dealing with land and legal affairs; accounts; the papers of William Smith Sr., consisting of correspondence, memoranda, and reports largely dealing with constitutional and legal affairs in Quebec; a diary of William Smith Sr., dated January 1784 to May 1787; the papers of William Smith Jr., consisting of correspondence with the Duke of Kent, memoranda and commissions; and various papers of genealogical interest. The diary mentioned above is located on microfilm reel C-736.

Smith, William, 1728-1793 : William Smith was a member of the Executive Council of New York from 1769 and chief justice from 1778. He left for England in 1784 and in 1786 was named chief justice of Quebec. In that post, Smith helped to frame the Constitutional Act of 1791. His son, William Smith (1769-1847) was a historian and held the positions of clerk of the Legislative Assembly, from 1792, and master in Chancery, from 1803, and was a member of the Executive Council, 1817-1837.

Textual records (Electronic) The finding aid provides an itemized list of the correspondence found in volumes 1-2, arranged by author in alphabetic order; and an itemized list of the contents of volume 1-9, arranged in chronological order. There is also a list of miscellaneous papers in volumes 3 to 6, arranged and described in chronological order, a list of additional papers in volume 7 and a list of legal records in volume 9, arranged and described in chronological order. General note:

The correspondence and other family papers (1684-1852) were received in 1964 from Mrs. A.R.F. Hubbard of Quebec, Quebec. The diary of William Smith was copied in 1949 from the original held by Mrs. Hubbard; now deposited in the library of Queen's University, Kingston, Ont. The remainder of the papers were copied in 1924 from originals and transcripts held by the New York Public Library.
