The item is a typescript genealogy and history of the Carney Family, researched and written by Dan Carney Jr. of Seattle, and later Mercer Island, Washington state. It documents the family of Richard Carney (or Kearney) and his wife Kells Dunn, and their descendants who have spread from Killarney, Ireland to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; the Gaspé Peninsula, Québec; Bathurst and Black Point, New Brunswick; and Seattle, Washington. The genealogy covers the years 1659 to 1956 and also includes information on the Wood, McEwan, Gosnell and Ellis families.

The Archives holds the Carney genealogy in two formats: microfilm and microfiche. Microfilm reel M-182 includes parts one and two of 448 and 139 pages. Dan Carney donated two microfiche in 1990 which hold the first 72 pages of part one, apparently slightly revised from the microfilm version.

Carney (family) : The Carney family first settled at Yarmouth, N.S. ca. 1812, and relocated, ca. 1822, in the Gaspé district of Quebec. Another branch settled in Restigouche County, N.B., in 1812.
