The collection consists of textual records, photographs, and maps created or collected by Clarence E. Shaver in the course of his research on the Shaver family and related or inter-married families like the Adams, Dow, Niblock, Duff, Sheek, French, Robertson, and Marsh families of Ontario. The progenitors of the Shaver family in Ontario were Frederick Schaffer of Schoharie, New York, who served as a loyalist with Butler's Rangers in the American Revolution and settled in Lunenburg, Ontario after the war, and his brother Nicholas Schaffer, who also settled in Ontario.

The records include genealogical correspondence with Mrs. Obrey Cryderman, Dexter Hand, Ross Rupert, Arthur Shaver, Mrs. Osborne Shaver, Alonzo Shaver, Eleanor Thompson, John Eaman, Arthur Eamon, Lena McConnell, and others; research notes; copies of wills, land records, and other documents in archival institutions or private hands; clippings from newspapers; maps showing lots owned by the family in Glengarry County and the District of Cochrane; and photographs of Shaver, Wert, McClymont, Duff and Troup family members. In addition, the collection contains genealogies or family tree charts of the Shaver family by Clarence Shaver, the Sheek family by Clarence Shaver, the Duff family by Laura M. (Duff) Shaver, and the Niblock family by W. E. Niblock King, among others. Some of the genealogies have been annotated by Marilyn Dow, Shaver's daughter, to show the dates of more recent family events.

Shaver, Clarence E, 1892-1973 : Clarence Edwin Shaver was born 20 June 1892, the son of Abram John Shaver and Minerva Mercy Sheek. He served in the 50th Battalion in the First World War and afterwards married Laura M. Duff in 1925. They resided in Vancouver, British Columbia. Clarence Shaver was an avid genealogist and collector of family-related material. He died 28 January 1973.
