This program in a series about U.S. - British relations, looks at the years after the 1956 Suez Crisis, when U.S. denunciation of British policy damaged the alliance. Using archival clips and interviews the program includes items on the following: the nuclear war scare prompted by the Soviet launch of the Sputnik satellite; the election of John F. Kennedy; the Cuban missile Crisis; efforts by Britain to obtain American nuclear weapons; France's veto on Britain joining the European Common Market; the shooting of Kennedy, the Beatles trip to New York, and the move by the U.S. to sell the American fighter bomber F1-11 to Britain at a cheaper price, prompting Britain to scrap production of its own TSR-2 fighter aircraft. Britain's lukewarn support of the American forces in Vietnam, and America's view that Britain should have tried harder to maintain its Empire are discussed. Anti-Vietnam war protests in London in 1968 are shown. Britain's refusal to supply materials to either the Arabs or Israel in the 1973 Yom Kippur War is explained by Edward Heath, the British Prime Minister from 1970 to 1974. This prompted Americans to call for the withdrawal of American troops in Europe. <1h>
