Collection consists of memoirs of Vice-Admiral Colville, covering the period of his active naval career, negative photostats, 1732-1764, 2 cm; eleven journals kept by Colville, photocopy, 1753-1766, 11 cm; and sixty letters written by Colville to his uncle, Major-General Charles Colville, 1741-1767, 2 cm.

Colville, Alexander, 1717-1770 : Alexander Colville, eighth Baron Colville of Culross, began his career in the Royal Navy in 1732, as a volunteer, and rose to the rank of Vice-Admiral. He commanded the Northumberland during the sieges of Louisbourg and Quebec, and served as Commander-in-Chief of the North Atlantic Squadron, 1759-1764.

Memoirs of Vice-Admiral Colville, 1732-1764, received in 1986 through the courtesy of E.C. Russell of Ottawa.
Incautious trimming of the photostats of the memoirs of Vice-Admiral Colville appears to have removed the bottom 2 or 3 lines from pages 2-9.
