Alyea (Family) : The Alyea family is traditionally of French origin. Sometime between 1685 and 1693, Jan Alie and his first wife, Susan (Laroe) Helling, widow of Tunis Hackensack Helling, emigrated from the Huguenot Colony at Mannheim, Germany, to New Jersey. Susan Alie died ca. 1706 near Hackensack, New Jersey, and in 1709 Jan Alie married Maritie DeGrave. In 1797 the first members of the Alyea family immigrated to Upper Canada.
