Metcalfe, Charles Theophilus Metcalfe, Baron, 1785-1846 : Sir Charles Theophilus Metcalfe, Bart., 1st Baron Metcalfe (1785-1846), was born in Calcutta, India, on 30 January 1785. He was the second son of Major Thomas Theophilus Metcalfe (d. 1813) of the Bengal army. He was educated at Eton and, in 1801, entered the Indian civil service. On the death of his elder brother in 1822, Metcalfe succeeded to the baronetcy that his father had acquired in 1802. In 1833, he was appointed provisional Governor-General of India.

In 1839, he was appointed Governor of Jamaica, then in 1843, he was appointed to succeed Sir Charles Bagot as Governor-General of Canada. There he attempted to reverse Bagot's concession of effective responsible government and was temporarily successful. In 1845, as "a mark of the Queen's entire approbation and favour", he was created Baron Metcalfe of Fern Hill in the County of Berkshire. In the same year, his health forced him to ask for recall, and he died of cancer of the cheek at Malshanger, near Basingstoke, Hampshire, England, on 5 September 1846.
