Collection consists of selected correspondence and papers relating chiefly to the period 1841-1845 when Lord Derby was Colonial Secretary, miscellaneous letters and memoranda, 1842-1853, four letters concerning Canada, 1866-1867, microfilm, 1841-1853, 3 reels, and transcript, 1842-1867, 1 cm; and a Stanley-Blackwood letter, 1846, 4 pages. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reels A-30 to A-32.

Derby, Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Earl of, 1799-1869 : Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley, (1799-1869),14th Earl of Derby and British Prime Minister, was born on 19 March 1799, the eldest son of the 13th Earl of Derby. Styled Lord Stanley until 1844 when he was called up to the House of Lords as Baron Stanley of Bickerstaffe, he was educated at Eton and Oxford and entered the House of Commons in 1822.

In 1824, he travelled in Canada and the United States. He served as Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, 1827-1830 and was made Secretary of State for War and the Colonies in Peel's ministry in 1841. He remained in this post until 1845. Stanley succeeded his father as Earl of Derby in 1851, and entered the House of Lords. He was Prime Minister three times, 1852, 1858-59 and 1866-68. He retired from political life shortly before his death on 23 October 1869.
