Fonds consists of correspondence between Alexander Sutherland at Red River and his relatives in Scotland and at Port Talbot, Ontario; correspondence and papers of Senator John Sutherland; and the correspondence and genealogical notes of Roderick Ross Sutherland. There are also research notes on various historical subjects.

Sutherland, Alexander (family) : Alexander Sutherland (1784-1867) was born in Scotland and settled in Red River with the first Selkirk party in 1815. His son John Sutherland (1821-1899) was born at Point Douglas, Red River. He became a member of the Council of Assiniboia in 1866 and was appointed to the Senate in 1871. John Sutherland's youngest son Roderick Ross Sutherland (1862-1945) was born at Red River and moved to British Columbia some time after his father's death.
