Fonds consists of the microfilmed correspondence of the Jewish Colonization Association with the Baron de Hirsch Institute, Montreal, relating to Jewish colonies in western Canada and reports on and miscellaneous documents relating to these settlements, 1891-1919, microfilm reels A-935 to A-939. The fonds contains correspondence, annual reports, maps, financial records and other documents concerning the efforts of Baron M. de Hirsch and the Jewish Colonization Association to promote and support Colonies of Jews from Eastern Europe in South and North America, Europe and Middle East. These records are chiefly in English, French, German, Spanish and Yiddish and are not well arranged, 1886-1900, microfilm reels A-940 to A-942.

Jewish Colonization Association : The Jewish Colonization Association was founded in 1891 at the behest of Baron de Hirsch. Its purpose was to promote the colonization and resettlement of oppressed European Jews in other countries (such as Canada) which were more willing to accommodate them. Originally the head office was situated in Paris, but it was relocated in England with the outbreak of W.W.II.

The microfilms A-935 to A-939 were microfilmed by the National Archives from the records of the Association with the permission of its directors. Reels A-940 to A-942 were microfilmed from originals in the possession of the Jewish Colonization Association at YIVO, New York.
