Estcourt recording his activities with the joint British-American Commission to trace the Northeast Boundary between Canada and the United States, 1842-1854, microfilm reels A-724 to A-726. Most of the personal correspondence is to his father and his brother Edward, while the official correspondence is to Henry Unwin Addington. Included are printed copies of Parliamentary papers, such as Estcourt's correspondence with Lord Aberdeen, the Commission report and maps, plus newspaper clippings and Estcourt's diary for 1843-1844. Two letters to Thomas Henry Sutton Southeron Estcourt, 1842 and 1844, and one letter to Admiral Southeron, 1835, from Dawson Turner, all concerning publication of James Wolfe's letters; letterbook of Captain Frank Southeron while in command in H.M.S. Fury, H.M.S. Romney, and H.M.S. Latona, 1793-1799, microfilm reel A-1611.
The collection also contains works of art, primarily by Caroline Bucknall Estcourt or James Bucknall Bucknall Estcourt, depicting scenes relating to Canada, England, and Bucknall's work as the Maine-New Brunswick Boundary Commissioner, [ca. 1830]-1850.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Estcourt, James Bucknall Bucknall, 1802-1855 : James Bucknall Bucknall Estcourt, army officer and surveyor; born July 12 in London, second son of Thomas Grimstone Bucknall Estcourt, MP, and Eleonoranor Sutton; married there 15 August 1837 Caroline Pole Carew; they had no children; died June 24 near Sevastopol (U.S.S.R.).
Topographical painter. Educated at Harrow. Entered British army as ensign in 44th Regt. 1820, but transferred to 43rd Monmouthshire Light Infantry 1821. Promoted to lieutenant 1824, captain 1825, major 1836, and lieutenant-colonel 1839. He distinguished himself during the Euphrates Expedition in 1835-1836, and came to Canada in 1938. Served on garrison duty in Canada 1838-9 and 1843-6. Executed views in Canada, mainly of Niagara, Montreal, Quebec, and St. Lawrence River region. He signed either with initials JBBE or with full name. Estcourt was appointed British Commissioner for the Maine-New Brunswick Boundary survey of 1841-1844, and delivered a Parliamentary report in 1846. He was promoted major-general in December 1854.

A photographic portrait of James B. Escourt taken by Roger Fenton in the Crimea in 1855, shortly before Estcourt's death as a result of cholera, is part of the Kirkland Album (acc. no. 1985-70).Additional information:General note:Microfilm was received in 1967 and 1985.
