Collection consists of papers of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth Duke of Richmond and Lennox, including original correspondence, a political journal, reports on the state of Quebec and on the Newfoundland fishery, printed memoranda relating to emigration, and family correspondence, reels A-1643 and A-1644. There are also accounts of the death of the fourth Duke of Richmond and Lennox by Colonel Francis Cockburn and Major George Bowles, microfilm reels A-151A and A-312, and family letters from his daughters, including Lady Mary Fitzroy, to his wife, Charlotte Lennox. Transcript, 32 pages. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reels A-151A and A-312, as well as A-1643 and A-1644.

Richmond, Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of, 1735-1806 (family) : Charles Lennox (1735-1806), third Duke of Richmond and Lennox, was Secretary of State for the Southern Department, May 1766 - August 1767. His son Charles Lennox (1764-1819), fourth Duke of Richmond, pursued a distinguished military career before serving as Captain General and Governor-in-Chief of Upper and Lower Canada, 30 July 1818 - 28 August 1819. Two of his sons-in-law also served as colonial administrators, Sir Peregrine Maitland as Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, 1818-1828 and of Nova Scotia, 1828-1834; and Sir Charles Fitzroy as Lieutenant-Governor of Prince Edward Island, 1837-1841.

General note:

Microfilm reel A-151A was copied in 1955 from originals held by Mrs. Tighe of Ireland. Microfilm reel A-312 was copied in 1957 from originals held by the British Records Association. Microfilm reels A-1643 and A-1644 were copied in 1985 from originals in the West Sussex Record Office, Chichester, England.
