Collection consists of a despatch from General Anthony Wayne to James McHenry, secretary of war, announcing the surrender of the Western Posts including Michilimackinac, Detroit, Miami, Niagara, Oswego and their dependencies, 1796; and a report by Major Henry Burbick on the state of the works and buildings at Michilimackinac on its surrender, 1796.

Western Posts. Capture : After an 11-year dispute over various posts on the American side of the border, President George Washington sent Chief Justice John Jay, to England to settle this and a number of other disputes between the two countries. The Jay Treaty, signed in 1794 and ratified in June, 1795, contained a provision for the evacuation of all British posts within the boundaries of the United States on or before June 1, 1796.
