This collection consists of a microfilm copy (reel M-2233) of a two-part notebook of military music, attributed to John Buttrey. Whether he compiled the whole - 1,012 melodies and 49 harmonies, with a partial index of their titles, plus several colored illustrations and a short narrative (which ends abruptly) - remains a matter of conjecture. The entries were made in the notebook in two sequences, one from the fron cover toward the middle, a second from the back cover toward the middle. The illustrations include watercolors of the British and French fleets in line of battle, 1782; the French fleet at the Nile mouth, 1797; and flags and uniforms of 1804.

Buttrey, John, flourished 1782-1804 : John Buttrey (active 1790-1804) served with the 34th Regiment of Foot as a drummer, possibly as its Drum Major, during the period of the Napoleonic Wars.

General note:

The music book was microfilmed in 1972 from the original then in the possession of Gladys Cameron and her daughter Sandra Cameron, then residents of Kanata, Ontario. Although the volume had been attributed to John Fife (b. 1773), an ancestor of the Camerons, close study revealed internal evidence to indictate that the volume was compiled by John Buttrey.
The Thomas Carleton papers formerly listed under this call number were transferred in 1971 to MG 23, D 3.

Location of originals note:

The original music book remains in the possession of Sandra Cameron, formerly of Kanata now (2010) of Georgetown, Ontario.

Availability of other formats note:

Colour transparencies of selected illustrations were made in 1972 and described in the Documentary Art and Photography catalogue.
