Collection consists of letters of Robert Gourlay to Alexander Hamilton, 1834, to David Thompson, MPP for Haldimand, 1851, and six letters to Sir Charles Metcalfe, 1844-1845, relating mainly to his imprisonment in Upper Canada in 1817; printed items, one is an unsigned address "to the People of London", [1844] and the other is a letter to the Editor of the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal from R.F. Gourlay, 1845; and a letter of Robert Gourlay to James Hamilton regarding his health and family, and a projected visit to America, 1856.

Gourlay, Robert Fleming, 1778-1863 : Robert Fleming Gourlay, author and reformer, visited Upper Canada in 1817, but ran afoul of the government as a seditious alien and was banished. He wrote a three volume Statistical Account of Upper Canada (London, 1822). Before returning to Scotland, he lived for a time in the United States.
