Collection consists of portraits of Jacob Mountain, his sister Sarah Mountain, and his son George Jehoshaphat Mountain. The paintings, done in 1778, of Jacob and Sarah are by John Downman, a British portrait painter. The print portrait of Jacob, done in 1820, is by engraver Charles Turner, after a painting by Henry Edridge. There is a print portrait of George Jehoshaphat and a watercolour which shows him travelling to Fort Garry in 1844.

The collection also includes a contemporary copy of a royal warrant for the grant of armorial bearing and seal for the Bishop of Quebec, 1793, 4 pages; a warrant for the payment of six months' salary to Jacob Mountain, Bishop of Quebec, 1805, 2 pages; a letter to Sir William Scott, 1794, and Scott's reply, 1795, concerning the powers granted to the Bishop of Quebec by letters patent, photocopy, 9 pages., The collection also consists of one drawing of Bishop Jacob Mountain, 1776, 1st Lord Bishop of Quebec, by Reverend Thomas Kerrich acquired in 2006.

Mountain, Jacob, 1749-1825 : Bishop

Jacob Mountain was born at Thwaite Hall, Norfolk, England, 1 Dec. 1749 and died at Quebec City on 16 June 1825. He was appointed the first Bishop of the new Anglican diocese of Quebec in 1793 and remained in this position until 1825. He made great efforts to elevate the status of the Anglican Church in Quebec, making the Roman Catholic Church hierarchy apprehensive. During this period, 60 churches were built and he defended his church's claim to the Clergy Reserves. He also sat as a member of the Executive Council from 1794. His second son, George Jehoshaphat Mountain (1789-1863) was the third Bishop of Quebec. The Canadian Encyclopedia, Year 2000 edition, McClelland & Stewart Inc., (Toronto, Ont.).

General note:

The warrants, 1793 and 1805, were received in 1936 and 1939 respectively. The correspondence, 1794-1795, was copied from the typescript held by the Episcopal Archives at Bishopsthorpe, Quebec, Que.

The print portrait of Jacob Mountain is framed in an elaborate frame topped by a miniature bishop's mitre.
There is a second copy of the print portrait of Jacob Mountain of unknown provenance.
There are three other print portraits of George Jehoshaphat Mountain of unknown provenance. One is from the London Illustrated News of 6 October, 1820; another is by James Henry Lynch and the third is a second copy of the portrait already mentioned.
The portraits of Jacob and Sarah Mountain were exhibited in A Place in History: Twenty Years of Acquiring Paintings, Drawings and Prints at the National Archives of Canada, 1991, and included in the published catalogue: numbers: 45, 46 and 47.

Custodial history:

The red and black chalk drawing of Jacob Mountain comes from family descent - great-great-great-great grandson of Mountain. The previous owner was Abbott & Holder from England (dealers in watercolours, drawings and prints).
