Sutherland, Thomas, 1772-1850 : Thomas Sutherland (1772-1850), merchant, immigrated to Canada from Edinburgh, Scotland in 1833 with his second wife, Grace Hogg, his three sons and two daughters. The family settled on the banks of the St. Clair River in Moore Township on land purchased from Louis Campeau. Sutherland was sufficiently well-to-do to open a store, build a wharf and warehouse.

Abbott, Richard, flourished 1834 : In 1834, Richard Abbott married Thomas Ann Sutherland (1812-1902), daughter of Thomas Sutherland (1772-1850). Richard Abbott held several commissions from the government.
