Masson, L. R. (Louis Rodrigue), 1833-1903 : Louis-François-Rodrigue Masson (1833-1903) pursued an active political life for many years. After retiring, he collected papers relating to the fur trade and published some of them in Les Bourgeois de la Compagnie du Nord-Ouest (2 vols., Montreal, 1889-1890). The basis of Masson's collection had been laid by Roderick McKenzie (d. 1844), who retired in 1801, settled at Terrebonne, and began a search for information, concerning the Indians and conditions of the fur trade in the Northwest. On Masson's death, the collection was divided between the National Archives and McGill University.

The originals were received ca. 1903. Correspondence and journals, 1784-1821, were copied in 1915 and 1916 from the originals held by McGill University Library.
Volume 60, previously inventoried with this collection, has been transferred to MG 19 C 3.
