Superannuation Fund of the Province of Canada : The imperial government recognized the need to support public servants who had become infirm or disabled. In 1811 the government organized a superannuation fund but did not collect employee contributions. In 1822 the government began taxing civil servants on their prospective superannuation but two years later repealed the tax. In 1829 a tax was imposed on all civil servants entering the government's employ after that date to finance the fund. When the Chancellor of the Exchequer prepared a bill in 1856 to alter the system of superannuation 10,000 civil servants signed a petition to repeal the tax.
