Fonds consists of twenty items related to the trial and transportation of Benjamin Mott including, testimony in his favour, as well as accounts and bills related to the financing of his defence, a letter written en route to Australia, and two letters written from Australia, 1839-1857; letters and legal records concerning the suit brought against Danford Mott by the owners of the General McComb, and the suit Danford Mott brought against the U.S. Government in response, 1839-1882; some of the land and business papers of Danford Mott, 1826-1887; the estate papers of Mary Mott, 1889-1910; and the family correspondence, legal records, speeches and miscellaneous papers of Hiram Mott.

Mott, Benjamin (family) : Benjamin Mott, a farmer from Alburgh, Vt., was captured at Lacolle, Que. on 7 November, 1838. The following year he was convicted of participating in the Rebellion; in September 1839, he was transported to Australia. His brother Danford Mott, who organized his defence, was a deputy collector of customs for the State of Vermont. Danford Mott was sued by the owners of the sloop General McComb, for his seizure of the vessel which was carrying arms to the Canadian patriots on 8 November, 1838. Hiram Mott was a descendant of one of the two brothers.
