Item is a letter from Vice-Admiral Sir Francis Pickmore, Governor of Newfoundland to James Perkins, Arnold Weller, Jonathan Arnoy, Benjamin Rich, Tristam Bernard and John Houston of Boston, acknowledging the reception of relief supplies for the victims of the St. John's fire, and thanking them for their generosity, dated 20 January 1818. On 8 and 21 November 1817, two huge fires razed large sections of St. John's, Nfld., to the ground leaving 2,000 people homeless and penniless, without food or clothing, at the outset of winter.

Pickmore, Francis, Sir ca.1756-1818 : Vice Admiral, Governor of Newfoundland.

Pickmore was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Royal Navy on 18 December 1777 while he was on the Newfoundland station. On 27 June 1782 he achieved the rank of commander and on 21 September 1790, that of captain. He reached his ultimate rank of vice-admiral of the white on 4 June 1814.

Though his commission as governor of Newfoundland was dated 18 May 1816, Pickmore did not arrive until 5 September of that year. He died in office, on 24 February 1818, while working ceaselessly to aid the victims of conflagrations in November 1817. Dictionary of Canadian Biography, V, 1801-1820, University of Toronto Press.
