This is a roundup of major news events of 1942, with intertitles and voice-over narration by different reporters, as follows: 1) General Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines. MacArthur, called the "hero of the Philippines" decorates soldiers. In the words of the narrator, "General MacArthur now in command of United Nations has pledged to retake the Philippines from Japan." 2) MacArthur arrives in Australia. Huge crowds at Melbourne station greet General and Mrs. MacArthur. 3) General Chiang Kai-shek and Stilwell in Burma. This item shows General Chiang Kai-shek and Madame Kai-shek descending a plane in Burma for last-minute meetings with United Nations officers, prior to the fall of most of Burma to Japan. There are shots of British General Alexander and U.S. Army General Joseph Stilwell. (Stilwell was responsible for working out joint China-U.S. military plans). 4) Flying Tigers in the Far East. A Curtis (sp?) P40 pursuit plane lands at an airfield with a volunteer Flying Tigers squadron of China's airforce. Brigadier General Claire Chennault commands. Also shown are streets of a nearby town, [Kung Ming]. 5) Allied Convoy Repels Axis Attack in Mediterranean. This shows a British convoy and destroyer escort, Italian bombers overhead, fighting and a bomber blown up. 6) British Bomb Paris. A squad of giant Stirling bombers prepares for its first raid on French factories in Paris. A wing commander gives crews instructions and the airplanes take off for France. Views from a British observation plane the next day show bomb damage. The bombing raid killed several hundred workers. 7) British Occupy Madagascar. The British fleet sails for Madagascar. The lnding forces commanded by Genearl [Sturgess] take the naval base. Shown are aerial shots of the area. There are close-ups of British and French officers arranging the French surrender to Britain. This is seen as an important strategic victory for the United Nations.~8) Battle of Midway. U.S. Navy Smashes Japanese Fleet. This item shows aerial views of the naval battle near Midway Island in which the Japanese fleet unsuccessfully tries defensive manoeuvres against U.S. bomb and torpedo attacks. An enemy ship is hit. Japanese torpedo bombers come in to attack. U.S. naval forces. In the words of the narrator, "Japan's powerful thrust against Midway is stopped dead in its tracks".
