Fonds consists of letterbooks kept by Edward William Gray in his capacity as Sheriff of Montreal, and for his personal business and legal affairs, 1767-1769 and 1774-1809. The last volume contains entries made by his nephew Frederick William Ermatinger, 1810-1826.

Gray, Edward William, ca. 1742-1810 : Edward William Gray was a notary public and lawyer at Montreal, deputy Provost Marshall from 1765, and Sheriff from 1776 until his death. As Sheriff, and through his legal practice, he was intimately associated with the affairs of the Province.
