Debbieg, Hugh, 1731-1810 : Hugh Debbieg joined the Royal Regiment of Artillery in 1742, becoming an engineer on active service in 1747 and a lieutenant in the Royal Engineers, 1757. He served in the Louisbourg and Quebec campaigns before being appointed chief engineer at Halifax, 1761, in Newfoundland, 1764, and in North America, 1775-1776. He rose to the rank of general, 1803.
