Montreal Branch : The Finnish War Veterans in Canada was founded in Montreal in 1935 as an association of ex-servicemen from the "White Guards" in Finland's struggle for independence, 1918. The association eventually included those who served in the Finnish armed forces in the Winter War, 1939-1940, and the Continuation War, 1941-1944. Its present name, Finnish War Veterans in Canada/Suomen Aseveljet Canadassa was adopted in 1955.
While its social, benevolent and philanthropic activities have been of consequence, the association's historical significance has been largely determined by the role it played as a centre of political conservatism and Finnish nationalism in the struggle against the "radical" Finns in Canada.Additional information:General note:Received in 1976 from Paul Puusa, Chairman of the Finnish War Veterans in Canada.Language note:This material is almost entirely in the Finnish language.Subject heading:- Finnish War Veterans in Canada.
