This consists of film segments prepared for a Newsmagazine program about the efforts of the United Steelworkers of America union to sign workers belonging to the Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers in Sudbury, Ontario and Port Colbourne, Ontario. The united steelworkers are trying to attract Sudbury workers employed by the International Nickel Company of Canada and Falconbridge Nickel. In addition, the Mine Mill and Smelter Workers union is contending with internal dissension. Long criticized for having communists in its leadership, the union is combatting a takeover move by a reform group. Don Gillis, a member of the reform group critical of the union's communist links, recently won control of a Sudbury union local. Gillis is one of the union officials shown speaking at a Mine Mill and Smelter Workers meeting in Sudbury. He makes reference to an injunction. Various speakers present motions and review union activities. Their comments, speeches and motions are not complete, because the cameraman periodically turns the camera on and off. Shouting from the audience overpowers the speakers on stage. One man close to the stage repeatedly and angrily demands to be heard. The chairman ignores repeated challenges from the floor. The news media and union members crowd around the stage. The meeting is declared out of order and the members are asked to leave. There are close-ups of mem milling about. After the crowd sings "Solidarity Forever", the meeting breaks up.
