This is film related to the campaign by the United Steelworkers of America to sign members of the Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers in Sudbury, Ontario and Port Colbourne, Ontario. Reference is also made to negotiations between the International Nickel Company of Canada and its workers. There is silent footage of workers walking into an arena. Police watch them file in. There are some scuffles. Claude Jodoin, President of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) is shown with a bullhorn. There is a shot of a worker with a torn shirt. The crowd, including some women, is shown seated. The audience stands and applauds as union officials take the stage. Visible in the hall is are signs that says "Mine Mill to Protect Commies" and "Mine Mill Members Voted for Affiliation to the CLC". Jodoin speaks to the crowd, to mixed response. He refers to freedom of speech, says Sudbury is an important part of Canada and maintains that the rights of the membership shall be maintained. The gist of Jodoin's speech is difficult to ascertain because the audio is intermittent. To quell the shouting from the crowd, Jodoin, backed by other union officials in shirtsleeves, sings O Canada in French and then leads shouts of "hip, hip houray". There is silent footage of Sudbury, showing the skyline, buildings, smokestacks emitting smoke into the sky, the surrounding landscape, stores and traffic in downtown Sudbury, workers leaving a mine or mill, and large containers (perhaps foundry melting pots or pouring pots) on what appears to be a rail car. Silent shots of Port Colbourne are alo shown, including a ship in the port, an aerial view of the town with smokestacks in the distance, and the Welland Canal locks. Members of Local 598 of the Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers picket in front of the Royal York Hotel in Toronto, to support striking hote employees. Reporter cut Robson (in two takes) interviews Local Presedent Don Gillis on the picket line.~He asks Gillis, "Do you want to face the camera?" They discuss Gillis' hopes to resume negotiating with the International Nickel Company of Canada and plans by the union's national executive to take legal action against the company for refusing to negotiate. In another silent sequence, miners coming off a shift pass by a line of Canadian Labour Congress organizers steelworkers who hand them pamphets. Some take the pamphets, some discard them immediately. Pamphlets are shown scattered on the floor.
