Fonds consists of textual records, photographs, and sound recordings concerning the founding of the National Congress of Italian Canadians in 1974; and papers concerning the Friuli Earthquake Project, 1976-1979. The fonds also contains architectural drawings, contracts, buildings specifications and a final report for a housing project in Pinzano, Forgaria, and Venzone, 1976-1977.

National Congress of Italian Canadians : The National Congress of Italian Canadians (N.C.I.C.) was founded in Ottawa in February 1974 as the national umbrella organization for the several hundred social and recreational local clubs and associations across Canada which are grouped into regions and districts. The NCIC was established primarily to give a national voice to the Italian community and to safeguard and promote the interests of Italian-Canadians. The first president of the NCIC was Alfredo Campo of Montreal, followed by Laureano Leon of Toronto and Frank Vincelli of Montreal.

The NCIC grew out of the federal government's multiculturalism policy in 1974 and the growing awareness of community leaders who wanted to bring together on a national level the disparate groupings within the community.

The first major project where the NCIC and its foundation led the Italian-Canadian community was the Friuli Earthquake Project which was begun in 1976. The NCIC successfully acted as the co-ordinating organization for the project along with the Fogolar Furlan. The NCIC acted similarly for the Southern Italy 1980 Earthquake Project.

Since 1990, the congress has sought compensation for Italian Canadians who were interned and arrested by the Canadian government during World War II. At one stage in the mid-1990s, the congress voted to drop its request for compensation and focus on clearing the Royal Canadian Mounted Police records of surviving internees; in later years, however, it resumed its efforts for compensation.

In 1990, former prime minister Brian Mulroney apologized for the war internment of Italian Canadians to a Toronto meeting of the National Congress of Italian Canadians: "On behalf of the government and the people of Canada, I offer a full and unqualified apology for the wrongs done to our fellow Canadians of Italian origin during World War II."

The congress has traditionally supported Canadian federalism. In November 1996, it joined with the Canadian Jewish Congress and the Hellenic Canadian Congress in issuing a pamphlet calling for renewed Canadian unity. It has also promoted the right of Italian citizens living in Canada to participate in Italian elections.

Several congress members have been active in Canadian political life, including Laureano Leone, Rosario Marchese, and Annamarie Castrilli.

Textual records and architectural drawings received in 1984 from the National Congress of Italian Canadians through Ariella Hostetter. Sound recordings received in 1974. Photographs were loaned to the National Archives of Canada, copied, and returned.
