Three reels of footage taken around the Fort Mackenzie Hudson's Bay Company post, and elsewhere between 1926 and 1941, record one of the last canoe brigades in Canada (Ungava Bay area). Reel one: Stephen's dog with puppies; Fort Mackenzie Nascapee repair post buildings and set off by dog sled for Seven Islands with mail; Stephen's interpreter pulling sled; Inuit, from Kuujjuaq (formerly known as Fort Chimo), camp in the bush near the Koksoak River and depart by dog sled; icing komatik runners; running with snowshoes; Gus Hambling; children carrying water; boy with Stephen's golf club; Peterhead boat; snowshoed Inuk pulls a toboggan; freighter canoe and a 10-ton schooner on the Koksoak River; Sunday at Kuujjuaq (formerly known as Fort Chimo) with post personnel Westley Bruce, Gus Hambling, and Wilfred Swaffield, and Stephen in the middle; 1928 at Fort Mackenzie. Another sequence shows scenes in Scotland, including the family of cameraman Charles N. Stephen and part of a skit by doctor-to-be A. Barrett Christie who became an authority on communicable diseases; group picnic on the beach and horseback riding. Reel two: Stephen demonstrates the shooting of caribou on the run and displays fox, marten, mink, and other pelts. A supply trip is made to Kuujjuaq (formerly known as Fort Chimo) by canoe; departure on ice. The return is on the Caniapiscau River and by portages. In an insert shot, Bill Calder is seen tending the dogs at Kuujjuaq (formerly known as Fort Chimo) in 1937. Moving camp from one place to another; sail on canoe is a tent or HBC point blanket; Anglican lay reader in canoe; children, women and men portaging supplies and large canoes; main camp in middle of portage; Jack carrying barrel of rolled oats; Sebastian Mackenzie with the towline; Mont Couche, foreman of the freighters; farm cart; drying fish on racks; Jackie Ford looking at big falls. Other footage includes a black bear killed at Fort Mackenzie, and a close-up of Stephen. Reel three: the RMS Nascopie leaves Montreal on her annual two month patrol around Labrador, Ungava Bay, Hudson Bay, James Bay and Baffin Island; Royal Canadian Mounted Police are inspected on board; and a freighter and a mission ship pass by; crowd waving on wharf; Bill Smith and Allan Scott, post managers, on board; icebergs off port side; Tommy Carmichael; American tourists. The motor boat Koksoak approaches, its Inuit crew and passengers are members of an HBC post. Freight is unloaded at Kuujjuaq (fornerly known as Fort Chimo); Inuit women in plaid shawls; members of a geodetic survey party on boat; waving off mosquitoes; W.G. Miles and James McGibbon, Labrador District Accountant; the church, Revillon Frères and HBC trading posts; two-masted motor ship "Fort James", which was the first ship to circumnavigate North America; congratulating Tommy Gordon with the long-service gold medal; 1932 - to Newfoundland on the S.S. Ungava; and narrows at St. John's harbour. <33mn 16s>

1. Title is taken from the title listed for Charles N. Stephen's audio tape commentary for this film, catalogued under accession number 1983-0077 (ISN 465311).~2. The Naskapi are also known as Nascapee, Nascapi, Naskapee.~3. Stephen's commentary explains that he had to wait three years (once he left the post) to have the films developed as there was no way of having them developed in the North.~4. Fort Mackenzie was established as an outpost from Fort Chimo.~5. Fort Chimo was changed to its official name of Kuujjuaq in 1980.
