Palliser, Hugh, 1723-1796 : Sir Hugh Palliser, military officer and colonial administrator, entered the Royal Navy in 1735 and attained the rank of admiral in 1787. He served as commander of the Newfoundland station and Governor of the colony, 1764-1769. He was concerned with promoting the island as a fishing station.
