The fonds consists of the administrative records of the Association for Media and Technology in Education in Canada (AMTEC), a professional association formed in 1974. The files are arranged chronologically by year and contain blocks of files related to: conferences, 1977-1993; correspondence, 1979-1995; board of directors' meetings, 1979-1995; annual general meetings, 1980-1995; financial statements, 1978-1996; policies and procedures, 1979-1993; and membership, 1979-1995. Other files relate to copyright, 1979-1995; awards, 1981-1995; elections, 1980-1995; related reports, 1982-1994; and other associations. Moreover, there are two sous-fonds holding the records of the two precedessor associations, the Education Media Association of Canada (EMAC) and the Educational Television and Radio Association of Canada (ETRAC).

One of the key activities documented in the fonds is the annual Media Festival held in conjunction with the annual conference. The Media Festival promotes and encourages the production of instructional materials by Canadian training organizations in business and industry. There are also files for the AMTEC awards of merit, leadership, achievement, and excellence, and bursaries made available for travel to international conferences. One such bursary is the Commonwealth Relations Trust Bursary.

In addition, the fonds includes files related to other educational associations like the Canadian Association for Distance Education, Pacific Instructional Media Association, New England Educational Media Association, and the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada.

Association for Media and Technology in Education in Canada : The Association for Media and Technology in Education in Canada (AMTEC) was formed in 1974 from a merger of two organizations, the Educational Media Association of Canada (EMAC) and the Educational Television and Radio Association of Canada (ETRAC). Canada did not have a national audio-visual association before 1957. Canadians interested in the use of audio-visual materials in education attended conventions of the Department of Audio-Visual Instruction (DAVI) of the National Educational Association of the United States. In 1957, however, the Canadian Audio-Visual Association was formed in affiliation with the DAVI. The name of the association was changed to the Educational Media Association of Canada (EMAC) in 1969.

The Educational Television and Radio Association of Canada (ETRAC) was a professional organization formed in 1968 to serve the needs of Canadian educational broadcasters at all levels of education.

In 1971, the Educational Media Association of Canada (EMAC) and the Educational Television and Radio Association of Canada (ETRAC)joined the Canadian Science Film Association and the Canadian Education Association in establishing the Canadian Education Media Council. The Council was established to co-ordinate and expand the activities of the member associations and to provide common secretarial services. The council was dissolved in 1973 and the EMAC and the ETRAC united to form AMTEC the following year. The general purposes and objectives of AMTEC are the improvement of education and public welfare through the use of educational media and technology. It disseminates knowledge through its annual conference, meetings, professional contacts, reports, papers, discussions, and publications. AMTEC also promotes research and identifies and analyzes critical issues, trends and developments in educational media and technology and seeks to provide constructive solutions through the selection, organization and dissemination of valid and useful information. Membership includes individuals and organizations interested in the purposes and objectives of the association.

Received in 1976 through the Canadian Education Association of Toronto, Ontario; in December 2000 through Leslie Moore and Lorinda Hammond of the University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta; and in November 2002 through Wendy Stephens of University of Calgary.

Arrangement note:

The records of AMTEC in volumes 3-11 (1974-1996) have not been arranged in series to preserve the chronological organization used by the association, nor have they been refoldered by the archives. During the processing of Accession no. 2001-0007, preservation photocopying of fragile correspondence was carried out and the acid-free paper photocopies retained in the fonds.
