The item is a letter by John H. Newman from Oriel College to an unnamed correspondent, dated 25 January 1841. The correspondent was probably the editor of the edition of Bishop Thomas Milles' Life of his father, the Rev. Isaac Milles (1638-1720), once rector of High Clere; the work was republished in 1842. Newman discusses the suitability of the Life of Milles for the series being published by [J.H.] Parker, and his own interest in the Canadian Church. He mentions his recent meeting with Bishop Strachan, and [William] Palmer's views on the position of the Anglican Church in Lower Canada.

Newman, John Henry, 1801-1890 : John Henry Newman was an Anglican clergyman. He was elected fellow of Oriel College, Oxford, in 1822 and became a leader of the high church Tractarian or Oxford Movement. He joined the Roman Catholic Church in 1845 and was created cardinal in 1879.
