Fonds consists of two letters written by Robert Lees in Bytown to his fiancee Jessie Dickson in Pakenham dated the 18 and 20 September 1849. The letters describe the events of Stoney Monday from a reformer's perspective and the Orange assembly on the following Wednesday.

Lees, Robert, 1816-1893 : Robert Lees, public servant, was born in 1816 in Dalkeith Scotland and immigrated to Canada in 1817. His family settled near Perth, Lanark Co. in 1819. Lees was admitted as an attorney in 1847 and was called to the bar in 1848. He was well-known for his defence of some of the accused parties from the "Stoney Monday" riot in Bytown.

Lees married Jessie Dickson, daughter of Andrew Dickson, Sheriff, and resident of Pakenham. Lees was a prominent Ottawa alderman, clerk of the Peace from 1857, Q.C. in 1875 and first Crown Attorney for Carleton County.
