Cunard, Samuel, Sir, 1787-1865 : Sir Samuel Cunard, shipowner, was born at Halifax, N.S. He was a successful merchant, a founder of the Halifax Banking Company, 1825, and a member of the Council of Twelve in Nova Scotia, 1831. In 1838, he established the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, the predecessor of the Cunard Line, and pioneered steam navigation. He was created a baronet of the United Kingdom in 1859 for the services rendered by the Cunard line during the Crimean war.
