Fonds consists of research files, general, n.d, 1961-1976; research reports, n.d., 1920-1979; administration files, n.d., 1959, 1970-1978; and reference files, n.d., 1951-1977. The fonds also contains photographs showing views of the exteriors and interiors of various industrial and engineering structures across Canada, [1900-1975]; and three photographs showing the opening of the National Historic Parks and Sites Engineering Heritage exhibition at the Heritage Ottawa Gallery, 1978.

Fonds also consists of plans for the following projects: Upper Dorchester Bridge,Dorchester, N.B.; E.B . Eddy sulphite mill and digester, Hull, P.Q.; Canadian Pacific Railway Tunnel, Brockville, Ont.; Kingston Marine Museum; Hamilton Steel & Iron Co. Ltd.; bridge over South Branch of Thames River, London, Ont.; Ottawa Hydro and Ottawa Water Works; and the Palace Grand Theatre, Dawson City, Y.T.

Canadian Engineering Heritage Record : The Canadian Engineering Heritage Record (CEHR) was set up in 1972 as a joint project by the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) and the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (IAND), the federal ministry then responsible for national historic sites.

The Record was to identify and create an inventory of engineering and technological achievements which have contributed to the development of Canada, with the aim of "providing a permanent record of the tangible remains of Canada's engineering, technological and industrial heritage, and bringing to the attention of the responsible authorities those items which may warrant commemoration or preservation". One catalogue of significant sites, structures and artifacts was produced in 1974. The recording was done largely by volunteers, and the resulting data, never verified, should be used with caution.

In 1974, the EIC recommended expanding the project to include other professional or trade groups. The result was the inclusion of the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers. Further proposals suggested that the CEHR be taken over and administered solely by IAND with advisors from professional associations, in a manner similar to the Canadian Inventory of Historic Building. No further action was taken, however, and the project, which had begun to falter, fell inactive around 1977.
