Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital : The Jewish General Hospital formally opened its doors 8 October 1934, after a successful one million dollar campaign, which was launched in 1929 by the founding president, Allan Bronfman. The hospital was the successor to the Herzl Dispensary and the Hebrew Maternity Hospital, both of which were founded in 1914, and the Montreal Clinical Society, which was formed in 1923 by a group of thirty Jewish physicians.

In 1927, a survey committee was established to determine whether a hospital was required to serve the needs of Montreal's growing Jewish community. It found that there was a shortage of 2,000 hospital beds in Montreal. As well, Jewish physicians and nurses faced employment discrimination in Montreal's non-Jewish hospitals. In view of these facts, the committee recommended that a non-sectarian, 205 bed hospital be established. A site was purchased at Côte-des-Neiges and St. Catherine Road in February 1930. The Act of Incorporation was received in March 1933.

The Jewish General Hospital has grown in stages. The latest addition was the Northwest Wing built in 1967. The bed capacity was then increased to 590. In 1983, the Hospital embarked on a 25 million dollar Capital Funds Campaign, intended to provide for an additional 130,000 square feet of new space and 100,000 square feet of renovated space.

The hospital has contributed to the teaching and research capacity of the Montreal hospital network. In 1939, the hospital was included among five area hospitals where McGill graduates could obtain their year of internship. In 1979, the hospital was designated a McGill University Teaching Hospital and is an active member of the Canadian Hospital Association.

In 1978, the hospital was renamed the Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital, in recognition of his ten million dollar bequest. The research arm of the hospital, the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research, was established in 1969 from a generous bequest of Lady Davis.
