Fonds consists of a scrapbook/minute book of the St. George Snow Shoe Club, containing entries dating from its inception in 1874. The book contains the original handwritten constitution of the club, 1874, as well as several printed copies; handwritten journal entries describing club activities such as tramps, competitions, social and fund raising events and organization; minutes of club meetings; newspaper clippings about the club; printed copies of notices to club members regarding club activities; invitation and programmes of club social and athletic events; pamphlets advertising the Montreal Winter Carnivals and the snowshoe events, 1883, 1884, 1885; copies of the first and third annual reports of the Amateur Athletic Association of Canada, 1884, 1886.

St. George Snow Shoe Club : The St. George Snow Shoe Club was formed in Montreal in 1874. Its immediate purpose was to keep the members of the St. George Cricket Club of Montreal together and active during the winter months. The snowshoeing club was private and membership was restricted to members of the St. George Cricket Club or members of No. 3 Company, Victoria Rifles. Members had to pay membership dues annually.

Montreal was the main centre of snowshoe club formation in Canada, although other cities such as Ottawa, Toronto and Winnipeg also formed snowshoe clubs. In the 1885 census, Montreal was listed as having seven snowshoe clubs. St. George was the third largest club and had 424 members.

Club members in the city would meet weekly and go on tramps which were usually ten to twelve miles in length. Members would first congregate on a street corner and then leave for their tramp. The social side of the activity might involve a visit to the local tavern after the tramp, where members could eat, drink, sing, dance and tell stories. The St. George Snow Shoe club had its first tramp on 27 November 1874, which was a success. Members also participated in competitions in other parts of Canada as well as in the United States.

The activities of the various snowshoe clubs in Montreal lead to the development of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association in 1881 and consequently to the development of the Amateur Athletic Association of Canada in 1884. Snowshoers also played a very large part in the famed Montreal Winter Carnivals of the 1880's.
