Fonds consists of correspondence of William Stewart and family, 1811-1973; letterbooks of William Stewart's outgoing letters, 1846-1856 and microfilm, 1834-1846 (see below); business papers, 1829-1934; estate papers, n.d., 1795-1938; subject files including reports, newspaper clipping book, genealogical charts and notes, 1841-1981. Microfilmed material consists of a letterbook of William Stewart from 11 August 1834 to 2 November 1846 with an index at the beginning; as well as four letters, 1841-1844, at the end of the letterbook. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reel M-5510.

Fonds also includes a variety of photographs. Subjects include: Egypt and India; Anthracite, Banff, Kananaskis Falls, Castle Mountain and Silver City, Alberta; musical group "The Elastic Band"; students and faculty of Bishop Ridley College, St. Catharines. Also included are many portraits by Canadian photographers, including J. Inglis, W. Notman and Sons, J.E. Livernois, E.Spencer, S.J. Dixon, G.F. Maitland and Josiah Bruce & Company. Photo of Shelia Stewart and negatives of Appin Place.

Fonds consists of maps pertaining to the Anthracite and Cascade coal mines in Alberta and the proposed Georgian Bay Ship Canal. Also included are maps of Ottawa and Yorkshire (England), and a technical drawing of a certain type of furnace.

Stewart, William, 1803-1856 (family) : William Stewart (1803-1856) was born at Bracadale, Minginish, Isle of Skye, Scotland. He immigrated to Canada with his family in 1816. They settled and farmed in Lancaster Township, Glengarry County, where William completed his education under an army doctor named Roderick Macleod. In 1838, he returned to Skye and married Catherine Stewart, the daughter of his first cousin.

After their marriage, the couple moved to Bytown, where William was engaged in running and supplying timber shanties, land speculation, farming and various community activites. He was also interested in the development of the Georgian Bay Canal. The promotion of the canal was later taken up by William's son, McLeod (1847-1926), in the form of the Montreal, Ottawa and Georgian Bay Canal Company. McLeod and his brother John (1851-1893) extended the family business interests into the West when they became involved in the Alberta-based Canadian Anthracite Coal Company.

William Stewart divided his time between his business, community activities, and politics. He was one of the original Bytown Councillors, 1828, and served as an M.L.A. for Russell County, 1843-1844, and for Bytown, 1844-1847. William's brother Neil (1793-1881) and son, McLeod, both upheld the tradition of political activity; the former served as M.L.A. for the County of Prescott, 1844-1847, and the latter held the office of Mayor of Ottawa, 1887-1888. The Stewarts were also strong supporters of the Presbyterian church; William was the founder of Stewarton Presbyterian Church, which later merged with St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Ottawa.

Williamina (Mina) Stewart (1879-1930) and Sheila Stewart (1894-1973) were daughters of McLeod Stewart. Mina Stewart was well known in Ottawa as a Sunday school teacher for the Chinese community and as a violin teacher. She was involved in several social service organizations such as the Canadian Women's Club and the IODE, and spent one summer as a volunteer with the Grenfell Association in Labrador. Sheila Stewart worked for the War Time Prices and Trade Board as a librarian. She was also active in church activities, and in the Women's Canadian Historical Society of Ottawa. Although a Conservative by political inclination, Sheila was a friend of W.L. Mackenzie King.
