Fonds consists of extracts from a letterbook kept by Capt. Alexander McDonald, including letters to his wife on the political and military situation, to Col. Allan MacLean concerning regimental and other military affairs, and to Gen. Sir William Howe concerning his past service and the raising of troops. The material consists of 11 pages of transcripts.

McDonald, Alexander, fl. 1745-1780 : Alexander McDonald (fl. 1745-1780), military officer, served over thirty years with the British Army. In 1775, he was settled in New York and returned to active service as a Captain in the 84th Regiment, Royal Highland Emigrants.
