Fonds consists of a memorandum book, containing a rough diary (not in chronological order) kept by Gilbert Purdy, while he was serving with the Guides and Pioneers, dated January to December 1777; and a few genealogical notes were added by descendants who had settled in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, dated 1779-1944.

Purdy, Gilbert, d. 1777 : Gilbert Purdy, military officer, was a resident of Ulster County, N.Y., prior to joining Samuel Holland's Guides and Pioneers. He served with that unit in the early years of the War of Independence, and died while en route to Philadelphia under General Howe.
