Item is a journal kept by Dr. Henry Brietzcke during his voyage on the Prince Arthur and the Prince of Wales from London to Hudson Bay and return. Brietzcke describes the H.B.C. ships' stop in the Orkney Islands, the wreck of the Prince Arthur on Mansfield (Mansel) Island, their rescue and arrival at York Factory, and the return to London. This material is located on microfilm reel A-1409.

Brietzcke, Henry, 1841-1879 : Henry Brietzcke was born in London in 1841, the son of E.I. Brietzcke, of the Admiralty. He was a student at Guy's Hospital, London from October 1860 to July 1863, when he received his M.R.C.S. and L.R.C.P. A severe case of rheumatism led Brietzcke to try the effect of a long sea voyage on his health lest he have to give up medicine. He therefore accepted the post of surgeon on one of the H.B.C. supply ships in the summer of 1864.

In spite of a difficult voyage, Brietzcke's heart disease abated and he held a variety of medical appointments over the succeeding years. Brietzcke married in 1874 and passed his F.R.C.S. examination in 1875; he became senior medical officer at Portsea Prison in 1876, where he remained until his early death in March 1879.
