Palmerston, Henry John Temple, Viscount, 1784-1865 : Henry John Temple, son of an Irish peer, was born at Broadlands, Hampshire, 29 October 1784. Educated at Harrow School and St. John's College, Cambridge, he succeeded to the Irish peerage on his father's death and became the third Lord Palmerston at the age of eighteen. At the age of twenty-one he stood for his first election, when he was roundly beaten (he also lost two subsequent elections). However, at the age of twenty-four he stood for election in the uncontested Isle of Wight seat, and was allowed to enter Parliament.

Palmerston served as Secretary to the War Office (1809-1827), Forgein Minister (1830-1841) and Home Secretary (1852-1855). In 1855 Lord Palmerston, aged seventy, became Prime Minister of Great Britian for three years. His second period started in 1859 and concluded in 1865. Although nearly eighty-one years old, Palmerston did not retire and once again he was elected to Parliament for a third period. Illness however, prevented Palmerston from taking up office. He died 18 October 1865.
