British-American relations are examined in this documentary series hosted by David Dimbledy. In this program, commentary alternates with archival footage, news clips from the period, and interviews. World War II's effect on relations between the two countries is examined from the 1945 decision of U.S. President Harry S. Truman's decision to cut off American aid to Britain, through an unequal and less trusting renewal of partnership in the face of the Cold War threat, to new alienation over the Suez Canal crisis (1956). Interviews of those who played an important role at the time include: Paul Bareau, British loan negotiator; Clement Attlee, British Prime Minister (1945-1951); Clark Clifford, advisor to President Truman; Gordon Arneson, atomic weapons advisor; and Sir Anthony Nutting, Minister of State, British Foreign Office. Clips from news films include: The Suez Crisis in an excerpt from Universal-International News and British Movietone News and Gaumont British News. Archival footage includes: Winston Churchill's "iron curtain" speech in 1946, urging America to unite with Britain against the cold war threat; public demonstrations against Churchill's speech; post-war riots in Europe; a meeting of European foreign ministers in Paris; Truman signing the Marshall Aid plan, pledging supplies to Britain; the Berlin Crisis (1948-1949); the Korean War; a 1950 address by President Truman after General McArthur's troops are driven out of Korea; the 1951 defeat of Britain's Labour Party; and British Conservative Prime Minister Anthony Eden resigning over the Suez Crisis. <60mn>
